Hello,

does Nikon makes underwater cases for its P6000 ? if not what is the best manufacturer of an uw case for nikon P6000 ?

Does the GPS Nikon P6000 feature works underwater?

thanks

Mario

GPS is a radio signal and thus will not penetrate underwater. You could use it on the surface over a site, before a dive. You would want to turn it off to conserve power.

Fantasea also made a housing. It's the FP-6000. I don't think it is available any longer, but you might find one on eBay or someplace.

I have the Ikelite housing. It is a bit bulky. Almost to the extent that I wonder if I should have gotten a housing for a compact DSLR or micro 4/3rd's camera. The Ikelite housing accepts a 67mm accessory lens. I found it tricky putting the lens on underwater.

IMHO Nikon really missed the boat promoting the P-6000 vs the G-10 and G-11.

Hello,

I also found this case for the nikon P6000

10Bar Underwater Housings for Nikon P6000

anyone owns it? how is it? cost?

I see it connects to the flash hot shoe ? it can handle an external fully automated strobe? how?

it also has manual focus control and can anyone tell me how the aperture priority and speed priority are controlled with the uw case?

thanks

mario

Don't know about other cameras with GPS. I didn't buy the P-6000 with that feature in mind.

The 10Bar housing looks interesting, but seems to be missing some buttons. I wonder about the functionality of that housing.

Shooting underwater you rotate the top selector knob to pick manual, aperture priority, etc. Then rotate the outer knob to adjust shutter speed and aperture. Those are toggled by the 3 o'clock position on the rear selector ring.

I use manual control.

TTL strobes attach with a waterproof cable/connector to a port on the housing. There is a short cable inside the camera, from the port, which connects to the camera hot shoe.

GPS: Like the Nikon P6000, the Panasonic TZ10 / ZS7 has GPS. Housings are from Panasonic (Asia) and 10Bar. See:

P6000 Firmware Update: Early on, The P6000 had a reputation for draining the batteries when turned off. Leave it for a month, batteries were dead. People got annoyed. Lithium batteries have very low self-discharge, so the camera was consuming excess power even when off. This behavior was improved with new firmware. If you have this camera, make sure to update the firmware to 1.2, which has better power management among other things. They addressed the issue and solved it, as well as fixing some minor bugs.

Market Success: The Nikon P6000 camera compares well technically with the G10, but it just did not catch on as well. Nikon loyalists like me would have bought it with proper promotion. Here is a camera that has 14MP, a 28-112mm equivalent fast VR lens, shoots RAW, shoots A,S,M modes and has a lens that moves out at the wide setting so it won't vignette (watch the G10 and G11 on this). Seemingly ideal for underwater. But it's two years old now, and it has not taken off.... Discontinuance is likely soon.
