While we drove by it, I wondered how incredible it would have been to dive underneath those Navy ships. Well, after reading this, that thought is put in the trash!!

U.S. NAVY ORDERS SEA GUARDIAN DIVER DEFENSE SYSTEMS

Thales Underwater Systems (TUS) of Templecombe, UK in partnership with Klein Associates of Salem, NH have received orders from the U.S. Navy for the supply of 15 Sea Guardian Diver Detection Sonar systems.

Sea Guardian is designed specifically to detect, classify and automatically track divers at ranges suitable for response and countermeasures and is an essential element in the protection of underwater naval and military assets both in homeland defense and anti-terrorist operations. Sea Guardian can be used either as a stand-alone underwater detection system with single or multiple sonar heads feeding a synthetic tactical map display, or integrated via a LAN into a mixed, multi-sensor integrated surveillance system. Mel Purvis, managing director of Thales Underwater Systems UK, said, "We are privileged to supply the U.S. government with its first production order of diver detection sonars. TUS is now in a position to provide this proven system to counter underwater threats to sensitive facilities such as ports, harbors, bridges and power stations around the world, as well as force protection to ships and other naval, military and high-value assets".

Thales's unique acoustic mirror sonar design is unaffected by interference from acoustic jamming and passing sea traffic, and uses a demonstrated harbor deployment system. TUS has developed Sea Guardian's automatic detection and tracking software to enable the system to be used by unskilled operators under a minimum workload. Bill Key, CEO of Klein Associates noted, "The combination of Thales and Klein sonar technology provides an off-the-shelf solution to a very demanding requirement.

"Lawrence Cavaiola, chairman and CEO of Thales Inc. further commented, "This is another example of Thales’s ability to provide innovative homeland security solutions for the US. It also demonstrates our proficiency in working with industry partners and the U.S. military to deliverreliable, cost-effective systems.”

I'd forgotten about those dolphins!
