I finally saved up enough to get my reg and BC (w/integrated octo). I'm planning a trip and will be renting gauges from LDS. Will they mount the gauges on my 1st stage or should I have them mounted on theirs? thanks~

I would have them mount the guages on YOUR first stage.

Don't quite follow - If you put them on theirs, well now you're renting more than just gauges. No point in having your own reg if you don't use it.

Basic gauges aren't that expensive compared to the BC and reg, try to find a way to get them and be done with this. If you haven't already bought this setup, consider this - you might be able to save some bucks by getting a regular octo instead of the inflator integrated one. (Read up on them a little, some people like the inflator octos but you'll find many don't.) Combine that with your savings from not renting gauges and you're most of the way to just buying gauges.

I had an integrated octo once as a rental. Didn't really like it. When you are used to one thing, it's hard to change. If it were me, I would take this setup on some shallow practice dives before taking it on a trip.

As for the gauges, I'm surprised your LDS didn't make you a package deal to buy the complete setup. As Damselfish said, a simple gauge set isn't terribly expensive. If you are waiting to buy a computer, my suggestion would be to buy the simple gauges and when you have enough pennies saved, buy the computer and either sell the now old gauges on e-bay or to a newly certified diver in a dive club. Or save is as a spare.

If I may make a suggestion . . . ?

Go ahead and buy your own spg/depth gauge.

This way you'll have a complete reg setup and won't have to hassle with attaching/detaching- renting the gauge when you go diving.

Then, after you've saved enough for your pooter, put your now "non-essential" gauges in your dive bag as a back up in case your pooter craps out on you. That way if you're out on a boat you'll have a trusty backup.

...I checked into costs and I think I can manage one more investment right now ---- for gauges. And, I've got a family member getting certified so can pass the gauges on to her when it's time for the "pooter".

Thanks for the the input~

Check all the dive shops in your area. I found one that has a rent/trial program. You make monthly payments and will receive the exact amount in store credit at the end of the term. The great part is I get to check out equipment (free of charge except tanks). This allows me to try different types of equipment without breaking me in the beginning, and I will have enough at the end of the program to buy it all then.

My LDS sells their rental stuff off every year, can get some good buys that way.
