Sounds like a good question to pose to DocVikingo. From what I understand on these respiratory muscle trainer, they pose a resistance to breathing, and that some studies shown that they don't work.

I think the spirometer that surgical patients uses are better, since you have a visual cue to maximize your inhalation, and thus maximize the range of your lung.
