search is not helping me make up my mind...

has anyone tested both underwater at night?

is it true that the HID bulbs go bad too quickly...

planning on bug hunting at night...

for an extra $60 i can go HID, but not if it will cost me too much in replacement bulbs or lots of batteries...

I use the UK cannon HID, its been used on about 50 dives. I haven't had to replace the bulb yet, but I bought a spare anyway for about 70 bucks from leisurepro. It does eat up batteries though, they sell a rechargable battery for 85 buck which I'll be buying soon. This thing is bright as hell, and great for hunting bugs.

FWIW you can use AA nimh's for the LC100 and still get a decent burntime.

If you havent found it yet, here's the thread with user's review. One even has LC100 and PT SW LED.

I bought the SW3 just last week because it's cheaper, there's no warm-up time, bulbs aren't an issue, and the batteries last a heckuva lot longer. I was also really scared about the fragility of the HID lights, since lights tend to get banged around. The SW3 just seemed more practical, and until I buy a full HID canister light, I think it's the way to go.

well, bought the Shockwave last week for nighttime bug hunting...my partner had his canister...had zero problems with illumunation...used it on high the whole time...want to see how many hours i can get from the batt's. vis was about 7 feet so i'll see what happens in zero vis... the HID will have to wait till i upgrade to canister

Gee~~~ You have already bought it. I also have two HID canons and recently looked at PT Shockwave 3 LED. I think this new PT is the closest light to HID canon in a decent price. I look forward to hearing more inputs regarding this subject.

Good post....
