Ok I was talking to a friend about diving and they told me that they tried diving once and in a pool they came up and their eyes were blood shot, broken veins.(it took six months to heal) What would cause this?? is it preventable?

Are they any rules about diving with a recent history of passing kidney stones??

 
Hi Fishkiller:

Red blood shot eyes due to broken blood vessels is caused by a mask squeeze. If you don't exhale into your mask through your nose as you descend, a low pressure area will be created in your mask and injure the delicate blood vessels in the lining of the eye. It looks awful but it's not dangerous. You prevent the problem by equalizing the airspace in your mask as you descend.
