Hope you are planning for a fun Fourth . . .
BEACH REMINDER - If you're planning any beach diving on the Fourth, just remember that some of the beaches host fireworks shows and that parking will not only be limited, but some areas may be unavailable entirely. Plan ahead and accordingly.
DOMOIC ACID FOLLOW-UP - If you've read the July newsletter, you noticed our article about seals and seal lions and domoic acid poisoning. CNN did a good story on it if you'd like to get some more perspective and would like to see what some of the rescuers are doing:
SEAS AND SEA LIONS IN TROUBLE.
NO AVALON ON THE 5TH - We have it on our sked but it turns out due to my personal sked, this may be the only day I have to fully prepare for our Yap trip as we leave next Monday (July 10). However, we will be going over to Avalon to dive the UW Park on Wednesday, August 9 (in between returning from Yap and leaving for Isla Mujeres), so hopefully that works for your schedule if you wanted to join us.
THAT SHADOW IS . . . A GREAT WHITE??? - You may already know that Southern California waters are a known area where juvenile Great White Sharks hang out and (most likely) learn to hunt. A 2-year study with drones was recently completed and published in PLOS ONE. It shows that we may have Great Whites as buddies, especially if you're on the surface swimming, paddleboarding, or surfing, more often than we thought. 97% of the time the drone saw an offshore human, the were a White in the general vicinity. But the good news is that the Whites simply ignore the human and go about their business. The study also notes the rarity of unprovoked GWS bites on humans along our coats and concludes essentially that the juvies don't pose any danger to us. If you'd like to read the report, here's the link:
GREAT WHITE STUDY.
ONLY IN DUBAI - (Thanks to Tabby Stone for turning me on to this story.) What do you do if you drop your $70,000 Rolex overboard? If you're in Dubai, you call the police and they send out a dive team to go retrieve it. And they found it in less than 30 minutes to boot. You can read more about it here:
RESCUING A ROLEX.
Short and sweet today. Dive safely this holiday period and if you're a fireworks person, do that safely too.
