LAKE PACIFIC . . . STILL - The pix above is NOT a repeat of the one from last week (note the time-stamp) but is what Redondo and Vets Park looked like AGAIN this past Saturday morning. It's really been quite calm all week long and it seems it's going to hold this way for a while longer. The water's chilly bit tolerable (57-59º), the viz is REALLY good for shore dives (30-feet plus), and at Vets, squid eggs litter the bottom areas around 70-90 feet deep. I've been hearing of similar conditions (albeit minus the squid eggs) at other shore sites up and down the coast. Get out there!!!
ZOOM SEEKERS THIS TUESDAY - It's about to be the second Tuesday of the month and that means it's time for Zoom Seekers. Our guest speaker this month is Dr. Doug Ebersole. You may recall his talk last year on diving and COVID and this year he's back to update us on what's changed and what's new and to just offer general good advice about how to navigate this whole thing. The meeting starts at 7:30PM and there will be a moderated Q&A following the conclusion of Doug's talk. Hope to "see" you Tuesday evening. Here's the link:
PRISTINE REEF DISCOVERED OFF OF TAHITI - Although as much as 90% of the world oceans remain unexplored, it's not often that you'd expect to hear "We've discovered a new reef" that's within diving depths. This one's around 100 feet deep and the fact that it's in such good shape unfortunately underscores how much damage we've done to the shallower parts of the ocean through pollution, climate change, and just diver damage. You can read more about the find here:
NEW CORAL REEF IN TAHITI.
EXPRESS ADDS CLEANUP BOATS - This year is already shaping up to one one of the largest and best-attended Avalon Underwater Cleanups. This is evidenced by the fact that the 6:00AM boat out of Long Beach - pretty much the only one you can take on Saturday to get there on time - has been sold out for a while, as has the 3:55PM return. Fortunately, in response to that, Catalina Express has added another boat going over at 7:00AM and another return at 6:30PM. So if you're been having an issue booking, now you've got an option. You can book these added boats directly with the Express.
WE'VE STILL GOT TWO SPOTS OPEN AS WELL - If you want to come as part of the official Reef Seekers group, we've still got two spots available. Our package deal (boat, taxi, event) is $150. Call us at 310/652-4990 if you want to sign up this way.
NAVIGATION CLASS SATURDAY - This might be easier than normal if the good visibility holds but we're offering our Navigation class this coming Saturday. Learn some simple tips and tricks for how to find your way underwater because it's always nice to end up where (or at least close to) you started. $30/person. We'll start with land navigation first and then progress to underwater with a single-tank dive. Call us at 310/652-4990 to sign up.
LIGHTING UP JELLYFISH - Researchers at Caltech were looking into how the brains of jellyfish work and have come up with a novel way to observe them: They can genetically modify the jellies so that their nervous systems light up when something's going on. And since jellies are basically transparent, the researchers can easily observe what's happening. There might also be application from this as to how human brains function as well. Read more about it here:
LIGHTING UP JELLYFISH NEURONS.
And that'll do it for now. Have a great week, go Rams next Sunday, and let's go diving soon!!!
