scubawife:
did Over the Edge reopen? That used to be a great place to go for a casual dinner.

Over the Edge (formerly Apollo 11) in North Side is open. Palm Beach (formerly The Edge) in Bodden Town has not re-opened.

Thanks for so much info. who do you dive with while there? On previous trips [several] we dove with Red Baron and were delighted, but are concerned about how long it's going to take to get to them from the South side. We had also stayed at East End Dive Lodge [and LOVED the East end diving], but alas, they are no more.
On our vacations, we like good diving and chilling out during the day, and tend toward good food and wine in the eve.

My wife and I stayed there in August 2004 (pre hurricane Ivan), and we didn't think it was anything great. We gave TNI a shot after seeing the great reviews it had on Tripadvisor, now I take anything from Tripadvisor with a grain of salt.
We also stayed at Villas of the Galleon on SMB during the same trip and preferred that over TNI.
This wasn't a diving vacation, but if we were to go back we'd probably stay at a more diving oriented hotel over TNI.

thanks for all the useful info. How does one "pick" a particular condo at Sea Breeze?

BTW, TNI must be pretty popular, they told us they are pretty much fully booked thru 2007 already.

Robinella yes they are pretty much booked.Well if you would like to see pics of mine just PM me and I will send you some. When are you planning to go ?

Ok since two asked I will post in public.

The Turtle nest inn is a very quaint quiet inn with lots of "old World" charm,by that I mean the owners Alain and Marleine are always available and make sure that everyone is happy. They pride themselves on their customers being happy. The inn itself has either 8 or 9 rooms ,they also have 6 condos ( Seabreeze) next door which they manage (and you can use all the amenities of the inn) as part of the inn.If you stay at the Inn you will be treated to a quiet almost European atmospere with great Hosts. The snorkeling in the back is pretty spectacular last time I was there ( 3 weeks in January) we saw spotted eagle rays.southern sting rays,60 LB. tarpon, baracuda , 20 LB.mutton snapper, lobsters, many different species of reef fish, this is all in 3-6 Ft. of water inside the barrier reef. The best diving from there is at the East End which is 15-20 minutes away by car.I must say a car is necessary .Robinella you asked about the resturants if you mean the ones north of 7 mile beach they are about 20-25 minutes by car during normal traffic .There is a lot of traffic during "rush hour" going to the georgetown/ 7 mile beach area.Rush hour is typically 8AM-9AM then at 5PM -6PM.I am partial to the south side of the island to get away from the typical tourist/cruise ship crowd. When the cruise ships are in Georgetown can get very crowded.

If you would like any other info just ask. John

Here is the Turtle nest inn's website.
Cayman Hotels: Turtle Nest Inn, Grand Cayman - Exotic & Affordable Beachfront Alternative.

My husband and I just finished planning our annual dive trip for 2009 and we kept saying that we "wish we could find another Turtle's Nest Inn!" Last October we spent a week on the Cayman Aggressor and it was fantastic - the boat and the crew were terrific and the weather was great so we were able to dive off Bloody Bay Way almost the entire week. The following week we stayed on GC at the Turtle's Nest and we loved it. If you prefer to be in town, near the nightlife and the 7 mile beach then the Turtle's Nest is NOT for you. We like a quieter and more remote location and so TNI in Bodden Town was perfect for us. The rooms are clean, attractive, air-conditioned and they include a full kitchen. The price was quite reasonable and included a rental car. The owners and staff were friendly and gracious.

The weather was not great during our second week on GC so we only went land-based diving one day; but every time the weather broke we grabbed our snorkling gear and jumped into the water behind TNI and we had a blast. The reefs are very shallow and the coral isn't much but there are tons of sea life (and the bigget jawfish we've ever seen anywhere!) I highly recommend the Turtle's Nest Inn!
