Dee,

He doesn't look very happy that you are so close. How did you get so close?

I'm sneaky!

He was sitting on a shallow ledge and was watching Beast. At the same time I held my breath  and came up from below the ledge so i was at eye level with him. I don't think he ever saw me. You can see how far off my strobe aiming was!

This shot is of the first black (or giant) sea bass I saw in Catalina's Casino Dive Park. I was videotaping lobster or octopi (can't remember which) when I felt a presence over my shoulder. I slowly turned expecting to see a sea lion or harbor seal and there was this large (300-350#) bass staring at me. Before I got my senses back and focused the camera on it, it had "turned tail..."

Now THAT's what I call a BIG fish butt! :D

One of our LDS'es used that shot to model a t-shirt in memory of Aaron Stark, a local Catalina instructor who died on the Wave Dancer when he went down to replace one of my regular dive buddies on board.

Now I could have posted a shot of another black sea bass using its rear end for a purpose it was intended for (and I don't mean locomotion), but that might have been tasteless (fortunately it was).

Another Red Hind...
