Here's an update from Lory Tan
Dear all,
A few updates.
In a text message sent to me this morning, Director Malcolm Sarmiento of the
BFAR made several commitments regarding the Tubbataha incident. I will
quote from his message verbatim...
"Be assured BFAR now moving to: 1) have "mameng" released ASAP. Since Park
Rangers could not implement order without great risk, Sec. Yap and I have
talked to Consul Guo of Chinese Embassy who committed to convince Sino
Captain to comply. 2) Now mobilizing BFAR 30 meter Patrol Boat for trip to
Tubbataha to conduct Chinese vessel back to Puerto, 3) Have dispatched Chief
BFAR Law Enforcer from Central Office to Puerto with instructions to file
appropriate criminal and administrative cases upon arrival of poachers. Got
word that he just arrived in Puerto and conferring already with local BFAR
staff and Phil coast guard crew of BFAR patrol vessel."
In a separate message sent to Yvette Lee, the legal team of Sen Jamby
Madrigal said...
"We will be issuing a statement tomorrow demanding accountability from DFA
for selling out to foreign interests, sacrificing rule of law to diplomacy.
We will cite 2 instances to prove her point - chinese poachers and marine
custody issue. We will demand accountability as well from MARINA, Coast
Guard for poachers."
I received an email from Mike Kavanagh, outgoing CEO of WWF Malaysia telling
me that the story has already come out in the Malaysian press.
I am in contact with the Tubbataha Management Office, our project manager
Marivel Dygico, Atty Gerthie Anda of ELAC Palawan, Atty. Tony Oposa Jr,
Director Boy Sarmiento of BFAR, Sec Art Yap, Sec Popo Lotilla, USEC Tessam
Castillo of DENR, Sen Pia Cayetano's office and Gov. Joel Reyes.
We are feeding information and updates to ABS CBN, the Phil Daily Inquirer,
the Phil Star, The Manila Times and BusinessWorld.
For your information.
