I have just bought a D200 and am looking around for a strobe that can work on TTL (or at least TTL macro.) I had heard that Ikelite have cracked the D200 iTTL code and the DS-125 was able to be used on TTL.

Is this true and does anyone have experience with TTL (both macro and wideangle) on these and any other strobe that claims to have true TTL with D200?

Yes, the Iklelite D200 housing has TTL when also using an Ikelite Digital strobe(s) (DS-50, DS-125 or DS-200).

I have a Subal ND20 housing (for the D200). I am having Ryan http://reefphoto.com/ put a Heinrichs Digital Adaptor in it so I can have TTL with my new Inon Z240 strobes.http://www.heinrichsweikamp.net/blitz/indexe.htm

The new Subtronic strobes have this adaptor built into them....but are very expensive.

HTH,
Dave

Ikelite and I believe Aquatica are the only two that I know of that offer housing with built in TTL converter. I never use it myself but from all that I heard, they work quite well on macro but wide angle is a different story especially if you have sunball or very wide range of lighting in the scene. Ikelite converter can only be used with Ikelite DS strobe such as DS50, DS125 and DS200. I think Aquatica one can be used with other brands of strobes as well. Alternatively Subtronic is supposed to release a strobe with built in i-TTL decoder (the same one that is in Aquatica housing, if I remember correctly). Otherwise, you can also just house the SB800 however nobody has quite figure out how to do the Nikon creative light system (ie more than one SB800) underwater yet as the wireless transmission has a very limited range underwater even with clear SB800 housing.

edited: opps, Dave just hit his reply button faster than I did. Sorry for the repeated information.

may i ask how much extra does ryan charge for putting in a heinrichs adapter? i'm thinking of housing my d70s in the future (when I scrounge up enough cash) and thought about using the inon zXXX instead of the ikelites as the inons are more compact. With the adapter, will you be able to get full ttl capabilty?

I am not sure how much.....I didn't ask....I just said "Do It". I won't know until I get the invoice. You can e-mail him and ask.

Just make sure your strobe is listed as TTL compatable on the chart on Matthias' website. Click on iTTL and choose D200. The list of suppoted strobes only lists the z240 & D2000 in the Inon line.

thanks dave. unfortunately, i'll have to shell out money for new strobes as my current one, d-2000, is not supported according to the website. lack of proper cord. but, i do like the compactness of the inons so would prefer to stick with em. again, thanks for the info.

We charge $295 to install the HW-TTL converter in Subal housings... Some other housings may require additional pieces or different bulkheads (aka sync connectors), so check with us for exact quotes. The price includes installation, function testing, and parts.

Sea & Sea's new converter is very interesting. It is a plug and play solution in housings that are wired w/ all 5 pins active (subal, Sea & Sea DX-D200, Nexus). Its exposures are perfect w/ Z-240 strobes, and tolerable w/ Sea & Sea YS-90, YS-120, and Z-220 strobes. I'm going to be diving one this weekend to make a better determination. I really like the seperate dial for flash ev comp that is much easier to operate in the water than messing w/ flash ev comp on the camera.
