Has anyone ever had a problem getting one through the bag check? Looking at it in the original packaging with the "2 SPARE BLADES" , it does look rather ominous. I'm thinking I should take it out of the packaging and leave (especially) the "2 spare blades" behind.

As above, no prob in checked bags. Of course.

Leave the "extra two blades" back in NYC. Replace them in the year when this becomes necessary.

For now? Smear those blades (use a q-tip) with a layer of vaseline.

Then strip and re-coat them upon your return home.

Are you talking carry on or checked? Checked baggage, you can have a knife (at least mine's been no problem). Now, trying to get on the plane with it...

Interestingly, my bag did get pulled on a cruise ship once, because a dive knife was in it, and they wouldn't let me have it onboard. Not sure how common that is. One of the things I like about the Trilobyte is how it doesn't look like a weapon.

Richard.

Sorry, to clarify, I'm asking about carry-on bag check. It used to be quite fickle.

My buddy loves telling the story of how all the divers on a cruise got called down when boarding to tell them their knives were being confiscated and would be returned at the end of the cruise. My buddy's knife was a blunt tip that couldn't stab anything. But that first night on board he had steak for dinner and was given a huge pointy steak knife twice the size of his dive knife.

DIR divers use steak knives with the tip cut off maybe there is a connection?

Razor-Type Blades - such as box cutters, utility knives, and safety razor blades (disposable razors and their cartridges are permitted)

So, don't call it a tool or a piece of sports equipment - pack it in your Dopp bag along with all your other non-liquid/gel toiletries but without any extra blades and definitely without a screwdriver for taking it apart. If questioned, say it's a disposable razor for trimming your hair. Worst case scenario, they confiscate it.[/TD]

Thanks all. I'm having one mailed to my destination (my Dad's house). I hate to get beat, even for 20 bucks.
