Saw this guy at the Blue Heron Bridge back in late March. Is this just a different color pattern for one of the trunkfishes?

I think so. If I'm not mistaken, the term "trunkfish" applies to everything with that body shape - flat bottomed, sort of triangular cross-section, down turned mouth for bottom feeding. I've seen them spotted, with a hexagon pattern, with both on the same fish, and with horns (cowfish). Pretty cool critters.

Yes agree - unusual colour. Never seen one like that before although it may be some colour change response due to the background it was living on. I reckon it is a Smooth Trunkfish, Lactophrys bicaudalis

its actually just a trunkfish haha. There are three kinds in the carib/florida. Smooth, spotted, and trunkfish.

Thanks, Sully. So, would that make it a Lactophrys trigonus (Linnaeus, 1758) Buffalo trunkfish?
