I may have to make a last minute itinerary change and not do Pohnpei. Will I enjoy Truk if I'm only Advanced OW certified with a Nitrox card and elect not to dive below 100'? All comments welcome!

How many days, how much diving do you plan to do? Land-based, I assume?

Many of the "destination" wrecks are deeper than 100ft, but there's a fair bit of stuff to see at 100' and shallower...

Fujikawa Maru

Heian Maru

Kansho Maru

Rio De Janeiro Maru

Shinkoku Maru

Gosei Maru

Hanakawa Maru

Kiyuzumi Maru

AS RJP said there are planty of wrecks above 100 feet. I think most of my profiles the week I was there were mostly spent above 100 with only a few under 100 by any significant margin.

Thanks for the replies - be there 6 nights with max 4 days of diving and yes - land based. If going - probably do Truk Stop.

This is not specific advice or an offer to do dive planning for you - you need to do that yourself - but I think if you open yourself up to dipping down to ~120ft on some wrecks vs a "hard stop" at 100ft you'll be able to access almost everything in the Lagoon but for the real "deep stuff" like San Francisco Maru, etc.

You mean 130 ft isn't the recreational limit anymore? In retrospect, I could have died!

I did 10 days on Odyssey a couple of months ago and there was a guy on board that had an pace maker and was limited by his doctor to 100 feet and he had a great time. That said there are dive guides that can / will go with you from all the dive operations on Chuuk but be careful there is a lot of that "trust me" diving done like that, make sure that you don't get suckered onto that slippery slope. Since you are new to diving there is a world of things to see shallow and then when you have more experience you can come back and see some more of it, there is even enough deep stuff that there are tech weeks on Odyssey for those that want to camp out on the wrecks...

Have fun,

I assume you are certified through PADI. But if you wanted you could just do your deep specialty while youre at Truk. Its not an expensive course. You have already completed half of it during your Advanced course. As far as tests and book work for the class goes, there is very little. There is only 1 chapter (I think, either way its not much reading at all) and 1 knowledge review to do and no test. The the dives are essentially fun dives that happen to be down to 40 meters. The course is quick and then you wouldn't have to worry about depth (within rec limits).

Webbah,
I just came back from two weeks diving Truk lagoon @ TrukStop Dive Center. Rob & Cindy will work with you on your dive planning at whatever depth you desire, and you'll have a great time. There's lots of great wrecks within the depth you mentioned but many more just a little deeper.

We dove the deep wrecks in the morning and dove the others in the afternoon. While this was our second trip to Chuuk, we always found new and interesting stuff on every dive.

I recommend you contact Rob & Cindy directly ( diveshop@dive-truklagoon.com ). They'll make the most of the time you have and make any arrangements you desire (hotel, tanks, airport pick-up, etc). Tell them Wil & Wendy said hello.

Safe Diving,
Wil
