Check out the Eclipse as an alternative to a liveaboard dive your ***** off experience. Check it out at: http://samstours.com/ Its what we chose as a compromise between the inconvenience of shore-based and the dive, dive, dive atomosphere of a live-aboard.

I did the Truk Aggressor in May and yes they are soon departing to Indonesia. We had a great week and I can't see any reason to do land based diving as there is nothing to do in Truk but dive.

The boat was stocked better than the town, there were no eggs on the islands (including at the Blue Lagoon Resort, the main resort in town) but we had eggs because Capt Niall had called the Palau Aggressor and had a couple that were doing back to back weeks bring 8 dz eggs from Guam. He then had his brother who had been on leave bring in 40 dz for the week after we were there.

Now that looks like fun! Now all I need is another couple to split it. Heck for $3000 for five days I might just want the whole boat to my self! But $2100 for six days would be better. Im looking at October, any one intrested?

Madrone, you'll love the Big Blue. Just got back and had a fabulous time. Tell Gat I said hi.

Wildcard..check out the Big Blue. Well managed, great crew, they really look out for you. Never had a problem with crowds at the sites. We were in and out before the other boats. The food is good, it's a big boat and you'll never feel cramped.

Don't know about Yap, except that the airport sucked. We stopped over there on the way out.

Valligurl, great. Always good to hear from someone who just returned. I can't wait. I need to be in warm water right now. Valli what kind of food did you get. Im vegetarian, so I asked for vegetarian food. So Im hoping they dont just serve beans for the protein. Keeping my fingers crossed. Yippee

I still think its the best value out there. Me and my dive buddy took the whole boat for ourselves for six nights and put two nights at the PPR on either end for about 8K total includes almost everything. We dive when and where we want and putter around on kayaks in the Rock Islands every afternoon. If you are looking for something more than dive, dive, dive it could be for you.

Started poking around some more and found Thorfin? that does a trip from Yap to Truk. Two weeks! Hummm???? Anybody do this trip? Sounds fun.

I did the Truk Odyssey last year and enjoyed myself immensely. The diving was emotionally inspiring, food very good, boat very nice, crew superb. The resort-well let's just say the word "resort" gets used too much. To be fair, I do not know all of the "resorts", just the one we stayed at while waiting for our trip. It was supposed to be one of the best.
I also did the Aggressor in Palau and loved every minute of that trip. We also stayed at the Palau Pacific Resort which was quite nice, except for the food-which was fair at best. The boat ride to some of the more popular places was about an hour +/- ea way. I prefer the liveaboard. Having said that, understand that when I travel 1/2 way around the world I want to be in the water. The liveaboards offer 5 dives a day in total comfort-eat/sleep/dive is their motto and it fits. In the 9 liveaboards from around the world that I have enjoyed, I have yet to miss a dive. So, I feel that it is worth the little extra you may pay. If you only want to do a couple dives then call it quits and just chill, you might just add up the numbers of what each offers and that may help your decision making. PS If you decide to go to Truk, I would be willing to send you a cd of u/w images I took set to music with 4 sec. images, that lasts for approx. 15mins. that will give you a heads up to what you will see. Regards,Wayne

Thats would be cool! Truk is the first priorty. Im thinking at this point Im just going there for 8-10 days then do Yap to Truk next year for two weeks...Let me know how to get ahold of a cd please. Thanks!!!!

We just did a shore based week in Palau and did 3 dives a day. That was great. I'm sure you could get more dives in on a liveaboard, but our's were enough for us. The hour boat rides do get long after the novelty wears off.

While there, we met some divers who had just come from Truk and they had good things to say about their shore based trip there. They said none of the boat rides were over about 15min., and their accomodations were fine at Blue Lagoon. Concidering the cost savings, I think I'd opt for that at Truk. We did also hear about Aggressor leaving soon and some real deals to be had.
