i was going to buy a reg off leisurepro and i had mentioned it to a person at a LDS. they said "oh, big mistake. leisurepro isnt an authorized dealer, so we cant service the reg. you would have to buy one from us." now to me, this seems like total BS. it sounds like another hey we want your money scheme. i would think, if i moved somewhere, a LDS would have no problem servicing the gear i had, and wouldnt even ask where i bought it. WRONG OR RIGHT? now dont get me wrong, i like to support my LDS as much as possible, but its things like this that make me think hard about giving them that extra $400 for a new reg.

False...
They obviously want you to buy the reg from them, and not LP... This should go in the LDS scams thread...

ANY authorized dealer for a particular brand of reg is authorized to service that brand of reg, as long as they have a service tech certified to repair that brand.

That being said, many LDS's will service anything that walks in the door... maybe not correctly, but they do it anyways...

Sounds like you might be shopping for a new LDS.

Not true.

Any authorized tech can service the regulator. There can be warranty problems with Leisure Pro gear since much of it is grey market, but all that means is that you might have a problem getting free service. As long as you're willing to pay for it, an authorized tech should be willing to work on it - he's getting paid full retail, after all.

i'm SURE this is what the LDS meant to say, i must have misunderstood. i think ill bring this statement to them and see what they say. if they still say no, then i can always tell them im sure the shop down the street thanks them for sending me there.

thanks. this is what i was wondering.

If an LDS represents the brand, they should have the parts and know-how to service the gear whether I bought if from them or not. If they say otherwise they obviously don't want my business.

Now, warrenty work is another question.

The shop I bought my regulator from went under, so obviously I can't get it serviced there. People move too. The dive shop most assuredly doesn't follow them around!

Seeing as most regulator warranties are just "free parts in annual service", it *should* only cost you "the retail amount for the otherwise free parts" extra per year. The LDS is just trying to scare you into spending $800 on a $400 regulator or whatever.

what regs are you looking at?

i know of a few LDS who will meet the prices of a online store....sometimes even LP

100% false. The LDS is attempting to use scare tactics in order to persuade you to buy a reg from them instead. A regulator can be serviced by any LDS that is trained by the manufacturer to do. It is irrelivent where a reg was originally purchased.

Since your LDS insists on operating on a policy of dishonesty, I suggest that you take your business else where, specifically LeisurePro.

They are certainly free to refuse to service the regs they don't sell. That wouldn't necessarly be good business but they can do it.

The part that others have brought up about them having to be authorized to service the brand you are buying is significant to. If they don't sell the brand you are looking at online they probably aren't authorized to service it and they won't be able to get the service parts for it.
