I have the same problem - my right ear always gives me problems. In fact, while descending, my right ear always squeaks, rather than "pops" - no matter how slow I go.
I've been to an ENT, who ran a plethora of tests - including inserting some sort of long tube w/a camera on the end up my nose. *Ugh* The only thing he could determine that may be causing my problem is that I have a deviated septum. There is a surgical procedure to correct this - but I'm not real anxious to seriously consider that yet. I'm afraid that the cure may be worse than the problem.
I'm still in the process of trying different things, but haven't found anything yet that significantly eases my difficulties.
At best, my equalizing problem is an an annoyance. At worst, I get less bottom time because it takes me so long to descend, and I can't do a drift dive that require you to drop like a rock. My dive buddies are well versed in the quirks of my ear - so we just work around it. However, for freediving, I understand where it's necessary to descend quickly - trying different equalizing techniques other than the Valsalva may help.
