There's been a lot of talk amongst business owners here (Ambergris Caye, Belize) about the insane levels of air fares into the country. That's not all the time, and occasionally you hear of someone getting a real bargain, but in general fares here are very high. We're only 700 miles from Miami, yet it can easily cost >$800 round trip. An ex-resident from here is now in Spain, and reports that a fare of $700 is readily available for a round trip to Cancun, but round trip to Belize is $1900.
To get to AC it's actually easy to fly into Cancun (CUN) and travel down overland. The last leg of the trip, just over the Belizean border, is a flight straight to San Pedro. It's a very cheap way of doing it and the journey is interesting, The downside is that is adds the best part of a day to each direction. Great if you're a student or someone else with more time than money, not so great if it's a family holiday compressed into a short timeframe. It's commonly used by the ex-pat community here when they visit their original homes in Europe or elsewhere.
