Whenever I travel the bugs get me. What is a good itch remedy to not take a layer of your skin off from scratching?

I live in a tropical location and my wife gets badly bitten (they stay away from me). She's an RN and she always uses and recommends Zyrtec. The "itch" you feel is a histamine reaction and Zyrtec is an antihisamine. Benadryl works as well, but it makes most people sleepy.

Campho Phenique also works (although according to my wife, not quite as well) and tends to repel many of the little beasties that bite/sting in the tropics.

1. to prevent the bugs from biting, get something like Cactus Juice. It is all natural, doesn't harm the skin or things in the water, and has some sunscreen in it, too. It smells nice too and doesn't melt neoprene like DEET. :D Cactus Juice

2. get Benedryl spray if you do get bites. It prevents your scratching the site. We travel with a small spray bottle of this everywhere we go!

I use rubbing alcohol and for some reason it works great
