This week marked a new years birthday, as well as Eric and Ed’s birthday. Eric made his birthday morning dive within the massive cavern of Blue Holes. The current was strong enough to carry our group to Blue Corner making this a two-for-one dive. Later on in the day, everyone continued to ask me about Palau’s cuttlefish. The group dived with high hopes to find one of these magnificent little creatures. Sure enough upon the German Channel Coral Gardens dive, our first cuttlefish of the season kicks off this New Year’s charter. It’s very early in the season to find one of these creatures, but it couldn’t be a better time.

It was a new year’s dawn Sunday morning and we certainly kicked off 2012 with a beautiful charter. We’ve been dazzled by massive schools of sharks, manta rays, mandarin fish, and our seasonal renegade cuttlefish. January marks the beginning of unique sightings by our various marine life. Moorish Idols were spotted in scattered dozens throughout the wall of Blue Holes and Blue Corner. There was very little activity happening amongst them, yet I feel in due time that these scattered congregations will soon gather for their mass run across the walls of Palau. As their school grows in numbers, it creates a marvelous show for our divers as they begin to swarm the wall side in unison. Like a military battalion of roughly a thousand, they soar parallel to the wall flanking left and right in perfect synchronization. When they finally do decide to take flight, it will create mass chaos amongst our reef sharks, napoleon wrasse, trevallies, and other predators. Unfortunately for the Moorish idols, their fight for survival won’t last for long. Luckily for us however, it could be the coolest sight we’ve ever seen… Ever. Happy New Year Moorish Idols.
