Spent all day Friday on the Cape Ann Diver II for a triple dive charter -- beautiful, mostly clear day with very calm conditions.

Dive 1 -- Chester Poling. 47F at depth. Visibility was OK -- maybe 20 feet. The boat hooked into the "broken" end. We did a brief tour of the exterior and after an 18 min. bottom time, up we went. We were there close to low tide -- max depth on the sand was 90 ft. A few folks came up the stern line -- luckily conditions were calm.

Dive 2 -- Chelsea. 53F at depth. Saw 2 spiny dogfish, including one very curious one who came very close. Max depth 60 feet. Vis was a little better -- maybe 25 feet.

Dive 3 -- Rockport Breakwater -- the first time I've ever done this site....a GREAT dive site. Although this charter was billed as a triple wreck, we skppied the usual trip to the Haight since aparently it has really become broken up. Before we got in the water, Capt. Steve had a little Mexican stand-off with an ornery lobsterman who was pissed off that we were in his way (we were there first). The breakwater is a partiallly finished stone breakwater. The topography underwater is a mass of jumbled stones running from the surface down to at least 60-70 feet. We cruised at about 40 feet on the way out, and around 20 feet on the way back. Lots of nooks and crannies and beautiful plant life, especially near the surface. Navigation is easy since you are just following the wall out and back. Lots of small fish life, including at least one large school of what looked like Pollock. Bottom temps were 56F. Vis here was the best of the day -- I would guess 30 feet.

The Poling is a great dive. I can't wait to do her again.

I've never been on the Chelsea or at the breakwater...interested in doing both. Capt. Steve made the right decision...the Haight isn't a very good dive...difficult to navigate, lots of current, and not-so-good vis.

I've dove the Poling 4 times now and this trip was definitely the best in terms of conditions and vis.

The Chelsea is somewhat overrated IMHO -- you can see a small portion of the bow...the rest is just debris, often barely recognizable. I've done this site twice -- not bad, but not a site I would rush out to do again.

The Rockport breakwater is definitely a site I'd like to try again.

Anymore details on how bad it is Large Diver? I know she wasn't much (and the current could be tough), but, I alsways liked the swim through on the bow and I figured I could take some my non-AOW friends there at some point.

I think the Chelsea is an all-right dive. There are a couple of cool spots to penetrated, but, after the bow it's hard to tell rock from ship.

Rockport breakwater is a great dive! And of course, the Poling is awesome.

Sorry -- I don't really know much about the current conditions of the Haight. I was on this charter with the Aquarium dive club -- the woman from the club who was coordinating the charter was the one I received the Haight comment from.....I did not speak to Capt. Steve about it directly.

I haven't dove the Haight since 2001.

I'm going out w/ CAD next weds, I'll ask Steve or Dave then.
