Ok. So that is less promising. Schwab would be back up. I like Xoom and make a big buy every couple trips.
It's free, get one, fund it with about $6K MXN equivalent and try it. Less cost than picking up a SB dinner at El Morro.

I'm saving my money for a dive resort.

Using my Schwab card, two different ATMs, HSBC and Banorte, gave me an "unable to connect to your bank" message yesterday. The ATM at Mega had worked fine a few days earlier. I ended up using my B of A card yesterday. This is the first time I have had a problem with the Schwab card. I'll try it again in a few days.

I know quite a few people who've used Schwab for many years, and this is the first time that I've heard of ANY problems. I wouldn't hesitate for a moment if I didn't have my almost free credit union resource.

BTW, Fidelity offers the same benefit(s), and folks are just as happy with them, it seems.

I called Schwab today, and sure enough they had disabled my card for "suspicious activity." Lesson learned: activate a travel notice. Schwab is apparently more sesnsitive than BofA, which I have never bothered to notify of my travels. So the 3 mysterious automated phone calls I received, in which no voice message was left, must have been Schwab's lame attempt to notify me of the suspicious activity. I asked them to notify me by email in the future.

You guys just open a Schwab individual checking account?

Sort of. The reason Schwab gives such good perks is that the checking account comes as a package deal with a brokerage account. There are no account fees for either. You could choose to never use the brokerage account.

Just for giggles, I stopped in the money exchange store at Reagan National this afternoon and asked their rates.....16:1
I laughed and said "no thank you"

That's what I did.

I just move money to it from a different account as needed.

Limits the loss if I were to get a card skimmed.

I might even put some money in one of their mutual funds as a thank you for the checking account:)
