Not exactly a dive trip as we only did snorkeling + swimming with the Humpback Whales at Vava’u, Tonga. It is part of my trip to Fiji and Tonga in August 2025.

We stayed 4 nights at Blue Lagoon Resort Vava’u and did 3 days of Whale Swimming. Operator and resort is 100% family owned and service is impeccable. Only downside is accommodation is a bit rustic but there is Starlink which is available till 10pm daily. Electricity is by diesel generator and Power is only available from morning till 10pm daily.

The 3 days of whale swimming is so so good. Blue lagoon has only 4 swimmer + 1 spotter for each boat. So there is no need to alternate like other operator with 8 swimmers per boat. Tonga law stated only 4 swimmer + 1 spotter for each whale encounter in the water at all time.

The captain and spotter tried to give us the experience of close encounters with the whales. We also observed several behavior like courtship, mini heat run, mum & calf, mum, calf and male escort. We also heard male whale escort singing loudly in the water.

On our last swim, we have a super close encounter with a curious calf that it keep come straight toward us. I will Highly recommended Blue lagoon Vava’u for close encounters with the Humpback whales.

Below is the video of the trip. Thank you.
