June 1 I am cruising to the Bahamas. Friends backed out do to an unnatural work ethic. Anyone want to take the 10 to 14 day trip. Leaving from Fl.

I was looking at planning a short 3night trip to the bahamas in May and can't quite figure out where to stay or who to dive with.

Any recommendations?

thanks,

I have also heard good things about Nassau Scuba Center. Not sure about where to stay, but www.bahamas.com (then click on Nassau/Paradise Island) has a pretty good list of places to stay on the island(s).

at nassau, we stayed at the british colonial hilton.. it was right next to the main straw market and absolutely fantastic! we dove our first dive with bahama divers. they were ok, but quite a bit of a cattle boat. i was not certified at the time, but i had an ssi 'passport' (similar to a padi resort course, but it doesn't expire as long as you dive at least once every 6 months). they let me dive with the resort coursers.. it was a bit crowded. the rest of our dives we did with stuart cove's. i highly recommend them. they let me dive on the regular boat and just made sure a divemaster was there to dive with me. the only thing i was not allowed to do was the shark dive. the folks there were great and there are two parrots or some kind of big birds in cages outside the office.
next time we go to nassau, we are thinking of either staying at the hotel next to stuart cove's or staying at the comfort inn on paradise island. stuart coves is pretty far out from anything, so there is no shopping or much of anything nearby.. all the dive shops did provide transportation though. the comfort inn is pretty cool because it is right next door to the atlantis resort and with the price of the room, you can use their beach and all other resort amenities (including the underground aquariums called 'the digs'). the 'digs' was pretty expensive otherwise (about $25 per person) but one of the highlights of our trip. of course, i am certified now so i do not have to worry about being allowed on all the dives anymore. there is a nice casino at atlantis too.

i like grand bahama a little better than nassau because it is a little quieter and slower paced. we stayed at the xanadu hotel last time and dove with their onsite shop also called xanadu. the hotel was pretty run down and had multiple power outages which were rather annoying. one of the times was when we were checking in and had to walk up 5 floors of stairs with all our luggage. for our next stay, we will probably be staying at a place called (i think) running mon. it should be close enough to walk to xanadu dive shop. i really like xanadu's shark dive. the dive master wears a full suit of chainmail and holds the shark's snout. he massages the shark snout which 'hypnotises' them. (it is believed that the metal scrambles the sharks brains temporarily causing them to go in to a 'sleep like' state since the sharks rely so heavily on electrical impulses to get food and avoid bumping in to things). the sharks go stiff as a board and then the dive master the does stuff like take out his regulator and kiss the sharks, bring them over for the divers to touch, and stacks them like lincoln logs. to wake them up, he turns them snout down. they swim around like saying 'you didn't just hypnotise me did you? you did! how embarassing! and in front of all my friends!'.

we may stay at port lucaya, which allows you to use the amenities of our lucaya (which is supposedly super nice). the dive shop close to there is unesxco divers. they also have a shark dive, but they don't hypnotize the sharks. their claim to fame is their dolphin dives (which xanadu does not have). the dolphin dives are rather expensive, but we might try them out anyway because it would be a really cool experience!
