I too was reminded of our wonderful trip to Sipadan last May! Dang it sure was fun.
Your pics were super too! We stayed on Mabul at SMART and loved it. I would highly reccommend them again. We are trying to return there in 2007.
You are a brave soul flying all the way from Milan! Heck, I thought California was far away! And sounds like you did it proper, in business class! Way to go!
Thanks again!

Good one Susie. But I doubt he connected through the US. Milan is actually about 950 miles closer to Sipadan than Los Angeles is - if you fly the "other" way.

Hi. I am looking to either do Okinawa or possibly flying out during Japan's Golden Week in May. I will not have a full week so I am seeing what my options are. How much are things in Borneo? Liveaboard, etc?

I have heard that Sipadan is one of the best diving spots in the world. I would really love to go, but I am unsure about what to do.

Any suggestions?

NigerH, if you can fly to Kuala Lumpur (or Singapore or anywhere else, I guess) then connect to Kota Kinabalu on your first day, the dive operators on Mabul and Kapalai can prganize your flight to Tawau and transport to their resort the next morning and you can be diving in the afternoon. Three, or better still, four days of diving should be enough, then leave in the afternoon, de-gas in Tawau or Semporna, then fly back the next day. If you are spending money to get all the way to Sipadan, I wouldn't spend less than 3, preferably at least 4 days diving. Also, I'd stay at a resort although there may be one or two LOBs around there. Finally, I don't know the current costs but as I recall, early last year for about US$150 per day you had a shared room, 3 meals, 3 boat dives, unlimited shore dives and transport from Tawau. You paid extra for the tip, alcohol or branded soft drinks and the flight to Tawau. I hope this helps.

If you are thinking of doing Sipadan during the 'GoldenWeek", you'll have to book way in advance as there is limited space and all resorts are normally fully booked for that period.

You will probably appreciate Sipadan more if you get there outside peak period.

I forgot about flying the "other" way to Sipadan! :)

Hey when is Golden Week in May anyways? And they are right about trying to go at another time. Too many people scare the 'cudas and sharks away! Did I mention I saw a giant Mola Mola while we were there? It was AWESOME!

Great write up, thankyou for sharing it! It reminded me of our trip in December 2004, we stayed on Sipadan just before it closed and had a fantastic time. Your pictures are beautiful and its made me very happy. I can't dive at the moment as I'm 6 months pregnant, so now I feel like I've had a dive without getting wet! Brilliant!
