Hi there,
A quick trip report for those who may be interested to go to Saba for some diving.
I went to St Martin for a week in May, but based on the hype in this forum, decided to book a day trip to Saba. And I can tell you it's well worth it !
For transportation, I went with the early morning flight with WinAir from St Martin and came back with the last flight of the day around 5pm. Short trip but enough to cram 3 dives. I would definitely recommend to spend more time there to be able to enjoy the island and get more dives.
I would highly recommend the Sea Saba center. It is very well organized, you feel like everything is planned to make the most out of your short stay, from the driver waiting for you at the airport to bring you on the other side of the island to them calling the airport at the end of the day to let them know I would be a little late due to the third dive: the logistics is just perfect.
At the same time, it is very flexible too. I called a few days before to organize a specialty split between St Martin and Saba, they had no problem with that. Things did not happen as planned in the first leg in St Martin so I had to call off the specialty but they organized overnight to get me going on a 3-dive day instead.
So for the combination of perfect planning and flexibility, I consider them to be the best dive center I've ever been to so far. Kudos to Lynn and the team
So now the dives, I went for three dives, the deepest in the morning at one of their pinnacles. They've got a big boat to bring you at the different spots, the volcanic island is pretty nice to admire from the sea even more with the fog at the peak. For each dive, you get a thorough briefing with nice drawings, max depths and all what is needed.
The sealife is pretty diversified down there, from the morays to the turtles through the countless types of fish and even a shark resting on the seabed. You will also be introduced to the warm yellow sand they get due to geological activity. Again, very relaxed and professional structure for the dives
All in all, will most likely go back there at some point
Hope that helps for those still wondering whether to go or not
Disclaimer: make your own mind for the trip by plane. Everything I read in forums and on the website of different dive centers was saying there would be no problem, but when I asked the pilot to stay at low height, he lectured me on the fact that I am not supposed to fly after diving and that you can never be sure he wont have to go to higher height during the flight because of unexpected reasons. I did not have any problem, but your experience may differ as they say..
