I am always encouraging others to come home from a dive trip and write a trip report, so the least I can do is follow my own suggestion. Warning: I am long winded and I take LOTS of pictures...VERY amature pictures...but I love to share them anyway  I am shooting video with a GoPro Hero and trying to learn how to put them together using Pinnacle Studio 15. It's a fun learning process

We visited Brac Reef Beach Resort March 31st thru April 6th with a group from Diver's Destination in Lafayette, LA. It was our first dive trip anywhere in the Cayman Islands. I was in complete AWE of the quality of diving there. In my opinion, it was some of the finest diving we've done on this side of the world.

We arrived in Cayman Brac with no problem after a layover of a couple of hours in Grand Cayman. BRBR had transportation waiting for us and in no time we were at the resort checking into our comfy room. I found the accommodations quite comfortable. The bathroom was a good size, with plenty of storage. I especially enjoyed the very large shower with PLENTY of hot water all the time :D

The resort was well laid out, with easy access to all of the amenities. All rooms have a patio or balcony overlooking the swimming pool and the beach beyond. And what a lovely beach! To help guests truly enjoy the amazing setting, there were numerous covered hammocks available to take advantage of. That was an opportunity I didn't pass up...

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the quality of the food at Brac Reef Beach Resort...it was REALLY good! Meals were served buffet style, and the selections were incredible. Of all of the dive resorts we have visited, I would have to say this was the best food we have been served. Of course, desserts were available as well. The pastry chef served up three or four different offerings with each meal. We managed to sample most. Yes, I did come home a few pounds heavier :shocked2:

The on-site dive operation, Reef Divers II, was one of the most professionally run dive operations I've ever seen. Information was communicated clearly and tasks were carried out with precision. They had three very diver-friendly dive boats. Although we had 20 or so divers assigned to our boat, I never felt crowded once. Dive briefings were the best I've ever seen. They even drew a picture of each dive site, suggested dive plans and listed what divers might encounter along the way. The briefings were very easy to follow and we always found our way back to the boat after being first in the water and last out. Our dives were mostly an hour + a few minutes.

One of the highlights of our diving was a day trip over to Little Cayman to dive Bloody Bay Wall...I loved it! Another favorite dive was the M/V Captain Keith Tibbets - and I don't even normally enjoy wreck diving. That's one special wreck! I could describe everything we saw during our week of diving, but instead I selected my favorite videos and pieced them together to form my own "movie". The total length is 20 minutes, but I had to cut it into 5 segments to upload to YouTube. If you are easily bored, segments 4 and 5 are the most exciting :D Viewing in full screen is a MUST, and sound is a PLUS

I will sum this up by stating that Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are absolutely fabulous places to dive and every serious diver should add them to their "bucket list" :) I would recommend Brac Reef Beach Resort without hesitation.

Cheers...

P.S. I neglected to mention that the still shots I combined into the video were shot with a SeaLife DC1400 camera

Oh, great!

Now, in addition to having "Stay a week in Cayman and dive my butt off" on my list, I now have to add:

"I really, really, really want/need a GoPro camera!"

My wife is gonna shoot me if I add any more toys to my wish list.

:D

GREAT review, by the way!

Thanks! It is great to know about this area....How was the travel to the island?

Surprisingly simple! We flew from Houston (United Airlines that USED to be great when it was Continental, but now sucks) to Grand Cayman, where we enjoyed a layover of a couple of hours. This gave us a bit of time to go up to the "Hungry Horse" and enjoy sandwiches and "CayBrew" :D

Then we connected to Cayman Airways for the short hop to Cayman Brac via Boeing 737. Luggage weight was not even an issue with Cayman Airways on this flight, but if you are on the smaller twin otter planes I'm sure they enforce the weight restrictions. So travel was really a breeze for us.

There are also direct flights to Cayman Brac on Cayman Airways from Tampa and Miami...possibly other locations as well.

Great job Diva. This was a fantastic trip and your video's rock. Here is a link on UTube for two movie clips I put together with your video's. Check them out. First one is a long video, so make sure you have some time to watch. Second one is just sort clips put together. Can't say enough about Brac Reef Beach Resort and Reef Divers II.

Thanks for the great report. Our shop will be going with a group of 22 in November. We were scheduled to go in 2008 until two weeks before departure a hurricane flattened the resort. Your glowing reviews of accommodations, food and diving were comforting. I do have to say that I stopped watching your videos when the diver began touching the turtle and then a grouper. As an instructor, I pound into my students' heads to never touch anything underwater because it unnecessarily stresses the fish, turtle, etc. I know I should keep my comment to myself because it's a bit of "to each his/her own", but I was sad to see that in your video.

I understand your comments Rob, and believe it or not...I feel the same way. I have never been to a place where the grouper actually come up to you SEEKING your attention. We were told during the dive briefing that they come right up to you and petting them is common.

The sea turtle was not molested in any way...the hand was not holding him - simply resting on him until he broke the contact. And I'm glad you didn't keep your opinion to yourself. We all have our own way of doing things and ScubaBoard is a great place for divers to discuss our differences. As long as the discussion is diplomatic, I'm always open to participating in it.

It's probably a good thing you didn't get to Part IV where the lionfish was killed and fed to the Moray Eel...

CajunDiva:
We were just in the Socorro Islands and were told that if a dolphin comes up and presents its belly to you, you can reach out slowly and see if you can pet it. One did this to me and only me of the whole boat and....I couldn't do it. I'm just a bit overboard on the subject. The guides on your trip opened the door and I now understand why it was done. Agree that the turtle touch was gentle and I've seen so much worse.
Last Feb in San Salvador, Bahamas, divemasters and then one of our group were spearing lion fish and feeding them to the sharks. Hate to admit it, but I liked it. So, Lionfish to eel not a big deal to me.
Take care.

Rob

Do they allow divers to carry knives and spears? I see both in the fourth video, but the lady looks kind of like the divemaster giving the briefing in the first video. Just curious. We are headed down to the Brac Beach Resort at the end of the month & I don't want to take the dive knives of we are not allowed to carry them. What is their policy?

Great post BTW! Enjoyed it much
