Hi Florida Divers.

I'm looking to drive interest in a last minute trip out this weekend to dive the Wreck of the Baja California aboard liveaboard Ultimate Getaway. We need 3 more divers committed by Wed noon to make it go. The Baja California was a 265 freighter that was torpedoed by a German U-boot 62 miles off Naples in July 1942 in 114 feet of water. There are tons of artifacts left, mostly glassware that was cargo enroute to Key West.

We plan to leave the dock in Fort Myers Beach around 10pm Friday night July 11th, wake up on the Baja wreck at sunrise, do three dives. Back to the dock in Fort Myers Beach by 10pm Saturday night July 12th. This is an advanced open water dive for Nitrox divers. Cost is $200 each. I have no vested interest other than making this trip go so I can dive the wreck. Call Bev at UG's office @ 239-466-0466 to book.

I wish I could join you but am tied up. I dove the Baja Calif with Ultimate Getaway a few years ago on the way back from the Dry Tortugas. It is a fantastic dive. Aside from the items of interest you mentioned, the wreck was covered with Goliath Grouper when we visited in the early summer. Given it is not a purpose sunk artificial reef, the wreck's 'architecture' is very interesting too. Very different experience for those of us who normally only dive intentionally scuttled wrecks that were sunk to make artificial reefs. Good luck filling out the boat: it is a trip worth taking.
