There have been a lot of adverts for - AQUAVISION PRO UNDERWATER SCUBA DIVING METAL DETECTOR on ebay recently (don't know if only on ebay UK).

Any thoughts on this unit. I am a regular UK wreck diver (regular as in diving most weekends ).

I wondered whether all you would pick up would be the metal hull of the wreck.

I suppose taking a seive down and sifting through the odd ton or three of sand would get better results?

For my money, the Minelab Excalibur 1000 is my detector of choice. This machine works just as well on the beach as it does underwater. My machine has more than paid for itself.

I use a fisher 1280x. Works good. I have found tons of stuff (good stuff) . It takes some time to learn the ropes but once you know what your doing its a blast. This year I found about 25 rings plus money and other stuff. Don't go to cheap on your machine...you get what you pay for. The last thing you want is a machine that leaks.

Sorry, but there's no such thing as cheap AND good with metal detectors. The Minelab Excaliber is surely the best UW detector on the market. I use a Whites PI pro. About half the cost of the Minelab, and I am very happy with it. But this will still run you about $600.

If your taking it into salt water than it had better be a pulse induction (PI) machine. Everything is junk in the salt enviroment. Alos, use it on land for a while before taking it under water. Learn how it responds to different objects at different depths. This can save you a lot of recovery time underwater.

Lastly, the majority of what you find will be junk. For every piece of jewelry you see in a picture of a heap of rings and jewelry recovered from the sea, there are pounds upon pounds of scrap iron and aluminum recovered that you dont see.

Yes and no.

Gold rings and chains usually show up as junk, most often in the same range as pulltabs.

I find that the more I am willing to dig up junk the more good stuff I find.

On top of that some of the 'junk' I dig up is more interesting than the 'good stuff'.

Apparently your not familiar with the operation of PI detectors. They dont have discrimination. What little disc the newest models do have will only eliminate aluminum and gold.

you cant find the best stuff if you're passing by targets.
