I am taking my weights with me on my dive trip (I leave tomorrow :D). What I do is to separate the weights in even amounts into each of our suitcases (we have four between my wife and I), and that keeps each case under the 50# limit.

I have some V weights I'm bringing - not using a weight belt - or I, too would just rent them.

In one suitcase I have 6#'s of weight, 12#'s of backplate, and one pair of socks. :D

Most airlines have a weight limit for carry-ons as well (usually 40 pounds but less on some airlines) although this is seldom enforced. If you bring 22 lbs of weights in the carry-on, you're looking at lugging it through the security checkpoints, transit gates, hauling it up the overhead compartments. You'll have to consider if it is worth it for a vacation. The weights are also taking up room for regs, mask and BCD, which I would rather carry-on.
The only weights I usually bring are my two 1.5 pound sea pearls ankle or clip-on weights because most dive ops don't rent them. Personally for me, 22lbs is too much to bring, I'd rent if weights aren't included in the dive.

So why do you need another suitcase?

Most airlines here now limit you to 5kg (11lbs) of carry on baggage.

I cant see any reason at all to take weights with me. Seems pointless, ive yet to see anyone that charges extra for weight rental.

If i was that desperate id just find some rocks to stuff in a pocket.

Now there is an idea! A new travel weight belt made to hold rocks....Wait, thats my Idea, I will have MY patent filed in the morning....

You may also consider just buying the weights you like at the dive shop when you rent tanks and get air, and then just sell them for half price to someone at the shop or dive site when youre done. Seems like a weird idea but atleast youll get to use the nice weights and still pay less than s&h to mail them.

Wear your weight belt through the airport.

It's my stylish new belt I swear.

My recent ill-fated Oahu Dive Trip? Got nailed $70 for a bag back home. Definitely some gear redistribution was done. Luckily I knew what things weighed and what to move.
My LDS charges for weights as gear, I think its $1 a pound so might be worth checking out. Yes they are included with tanks on a boat trip.
One thing I’ve learned reading here is there are a lot of variables in the world of diving.
