I’m an experienced diver planning on doing my first dive trip solo – not traveling with a dive buddy or a group. Right now I think a live aboard is my best option as a single – besides, I love doing a live aboard and having a week of nothing but diving. My biggest concern is hooking up with a competent dive buddy.

I was hoping to get some feedback on the experience others have had on both live aboard and land based trips traveling alone. Any suggestions, warnings, recommendations, etc.?

gstx,
welcome to this board.
you will find a huge amount of info here.
when i travel solo, i do a liveaboard.
half the time i've ended up with a private cabin because most divers travel in pairs.
as for buddies, most of the time they have been ok.
we've dove as a group with at least one dm in the water.
a couple of times my "buddy" has been so-so.
july 16th i'll be aboard the m/v carribean explorer in the bahamas.
i'm taking the sdi class solo diver for this reason.
i feel the certification will build my confidence and make me a better buddy.
good luck with y'alls travel plans and drop us a trip report upon your safe return.
regards,

I've done two Live a boards as a solo diver. The best part is not having to share a bunk with anyone! Dive buddies were easy to hook up with and for the most part competent. One wasn't and I didn't dive with him again. He found another new diver and they dove the rest of the week together and had a great time. Go and enjoy.

I'm trying to decide between the Explorer Turks & Caicos trip or the St Kitt trip but will do one or the other late August or early September.

I would love to hear what you think of the Explorer operation when you get back. I'd also like to hear what you think of the SDI class.

Do you take a pony or spare air when you travel alone?

I did three liveaboard trips solo. On two, I had the cabin to myself - sweet. Since liveaboard cabins are SMALL, everyone hangs out in the common areas or on the sundeck. All meals are common. So you do not feel that you are alone - as opposed to staying at a resort solo. I think a liveaboard is the only way to go if traveling alone for my personality.

The first trip, my buddy was the only other solo diver. He used up his air in about 30 minutes, so I simply finished the dive solo. The second trip I was buddies with a woman who was also traveling solo. Our dive styles, air consumption, etc. meshed perfectly. She would wander when I was working on a photo, then i would catch up so she would not always have to "come back" to me.

The third trip, I chose to dive solo the whole trip (except for two dives when I was asked to be a buddy when the diver's regular buddy was not feeling well). I was equipped with safety sausage, dive alert, whistel, foldable flag, signal mirror, spare light. I did not have a pony or spare air, and I think that is a mistake.

I will be on a liveaboard again this November. I will take a 13 cf pony bottle this time. Since when I dive solo I do not exceed 75 ft, the 13 cf will allow me to ascend and do a 3 minute stop in the case of an emergency.

Definitely a liveaboard is a comfortable option for solos. Other good options include organized group trips, such as through your LDS, or larger organizations such as PADI or PADI Dive Society. My next trip is a Dive Society trip to Cozumel next month. Single supplement isn't bad at all, or I can share a room.
