I'm a Fish!
I recently purchased travel insurance through Orbitz, which I thought was wise at the time, but found out the hard way that Access America has some pretty shady business practices.

I was involved in a roll-over accident in Mexico and suffered injuries, took an ambulance ride to a local hospital, and had some xrays taken. Part of the reason I decided to take the ambulance ride was that I THOUGHT my travel insurance would protect me; however, it appears their company is doing everything in their power to deny claims, create delays, and frustrate their customers.

What they'll do is send some information by mail, with no exclusions so as to suggest the insurance is comprehensive, but they'll also send the real PDF policy via email and hope spam filters deliver them to your trash bin. The reason, I assume, is because the exclusions list is large and their emergency medical coverage is SECONDARY ONLY.

This means if you have health insurance with a huge deductible, have a pre-existing medical condition --or any other trivial reason-- then Access America is going to deny your claim.

My advice is to look skeptically at any travel insurance and demand information be provided by mail, so you'll actually have an opportunity to make an educated choice. I would also discourage you from trusting Access America... who claim to be the largest travel insurance provider in the US but have less than stellar comments left by previous customers.

Do your homework and check online feedback!!!

Glad you survived the rollover and Mexican health care. Yeah, I take trip insurance but I shop for it independently - buying where I can read all the details in advance. I prefer TravelSafe but there are many to shop.

Orbitz, Expedia and most of the big on line travel sites are affilated with the airlines and have no experence in dealing with divers, and they do not generally have your best interest at heart. Had you used an experienced travel agent they would have know about the ins and outs of travel insurance, particuarlly as a diver you need to have primary coverage rather than secondary. An experenced dive travel agent can also advise on what is covered by DAN, or Diveassure should you be injured or have problems while traveling. You always hope that you don't need travel insurance, but as friend of mine once said "hope is not a method", the value of good travel insurance is well the cost.
