The Alaska legislature, in May, made the "Knik River Public Use Area." We hope that an accompanying management plan, designated law enforcement and user fees, will help the area to recover and become a wonderful place for multi-use recreation. Restoration of the wetlands and the dunes is a priority, as are designated trails for ATVs, horseback riders and other users, so everyone will be able to go to the Knik Glacier without conflict.
It's going to be tough going for horses, though, because there's glass from shot-up bottles, and nails and staples from pallet bon fires everywhere.
If anyone is interested in the legislation, they may want to go to www.buttealaska.org. The website is far from finished, but "Issues" and "Recreation" pages offer information.
