Hi Scuba Board,

I sent my transmitter in for the recall last August. The first dive after the transmitter came back, my five year old Vyper Air connected after clearing the code first try. I was able to check my air pressure against my SPG and it was about 100psi less than the SPG as it was before the recall.

On the surface swim out everything was fine until I began descending.
within the first 10' the FAIL error appeared where the air pressure is indicated. I have a backup dc completed the dive. After the dive I re-cleared the code, switched out tanks and air pressure was transmitting no issue.

Again on the 2nd dive the air pressure was being reported until I began to descend. FAIL error appeared within the first 10'.

At this point I took the transmitter back to the dive shop and had it sent back to Suunto.

Yesterday I received the transmitter back from Suunto. They said they could not duplicate the failure but in good faith they replaced the transmitter under warranty.

I went directly to my dive site, cleared the code confirmed the air pressure matched my SPG and surface swam out to the dive site. Again as soon as I descended the FAIL error appeared.

So I'm putting it out to the community. Any ideas?

Scott

No idea unless it has anything to do with where you have your transmitter located. But I would assume you placed it where you had it before the recall and had no problems with it then. But the fact that Suunto could not duplicate the problem and it has now happened on 3 consecutive dives with 2 different transmitters (I'm also assuming you did verify it was a different one they sent you) would indicate the problem lies somewhere within your set-up.

Sorry I can't help any further than that. I have not had a problem with mine either before or following the recall. I, too, had the Vyper Air, which my transmitter came with, until it went wonky after 1 year and was replaced under warranty with a Vyper Novo. The transmitter has worked flawlessly with both.

Try changing the DC battery. The battery indicator is not all that accurate.

Sounds like a computer issue, not a transmitter problem. Especially since they could not duplicate and it happed again with a replacement transmitter.

I agree it sounds more like a problem with the computer. Best to send BOTH in.

Do you have a high pressure hose to put the transmitter on and bring it closer to the computer?

I'm wondering if the new housings might reduce the signal slightly.

Pretty certain my housing was changed, but perhaps for other reasons.

Still, bringing the transmitter closer to the computer can help identify if the issue is related to the wireless connection or something else.

Can you share which side of the first stage your transmitter is on and where your computer is and which side that’s on? (I have a Vyper Air with AI as well.)

Thanks for the good response all!

I have my transmitter on the first stage HP port closest to my Vyper Air DC. My DC is in a boot and I wear it on my right wrist.

One thing comes to mind I just bought a Shearwood Petrel2. I've been mounting the Petrel2 right next to my Vyper Air for the last 1/2 dozen dives now. I know they both have bluetooth but the Petrel should only be transmitting when I download my dives in front of my home computer.

The fact remains the connection is good until I start to ascend. I think that means there's no issue of distance or crosstalk with the Petrel.

I sent the DC and the transmitter to Suunto last Monday. I'll post when i know something more.

Thanks ScubaBoard!

Scott
