I just bought two (one for each of us) laser pens for signalling each other and for pointing out something without getting too close. Anxious to try. Does anyone have those and willing to tell experience with them?

Just curious.

CompuDude:
Mix 50% Isoprypyl Alcohol (plain old rubbing alcohol) and white wine vinegar. Pour into ear for 5 full minutes at the end of the day. Repeat with other ear.

Do this every day you dive and you won't get any more ear infections. Practically free, No batteries required, and no stupid hair dryer blowing in your ear. You may smell like a salad, though. :)Should work well, we also put mineral oil in the ear before the dive.

Hi Bullswan.

Where do you get these underwater laser pens from?

Cheers

Adam.

While not useful for all types of diving, I really like my LPS-1 Handheld Depth Finder.

I find it really handy on shore dives where was are going over a submarine canyon such as we have in La Jolla, CA or Redondo Beach, CA.

It makes it easy to drop down at the depth you want or to find particular underwater features. It allows us to more easily find an underwater peninsula (North Wall and Way North Wall) in La Jolla Canyon and also helps to find Deadman's Reef at Crescent Bay in Laguna Beach.

You can also use it horizontally at depth to find stucture on an otherwise sandy bottom. Using it horizontally also helps to acurately determine vis when you point it at something at the edge of your vis.

Without the depth finder, I find that we sometimes waste gas finding what we are looking for.

It's a cool tool and I only take it with me on dives where I know we're looking for something in particular.

Headhunter: I love the idea of the LPS-1! It's a real toy! :) (Sort of reminds me of a cheaper alternative to the sonar finders they used in that movie 'The Cave')

Bean_Counter: Thanks. The link didn't show up, but I did a search in Google, and found them. Unfortuantly the shipping is more than 1.5 times the cost of the actual device, to get it shipped OS.

Do you find that the laser pointer works OK at day, or only at night?

(If only I asked these questions a month ago. Some really cool gift ideas here!)

Ice9:
Oh man! There's a good water-proof housinng for the iPod out there that is good beyond 10 ft? Where?

Must buy.

Sounds like a great DIY project.

(this will work, but the controls wont work once the box is closed, so you'll have to have a diving playlist to start before your dive)

Get a watertight box made by otterbox (www.otterbox.com), goot for 100ft
Buy water proof headphones.
Get something called cable glands for wher the headphone wire passes through the box.

Look at some people instructions for DIY canister lights for more info on how to pass the wire through the box and leave it watertight.

I haven't seen a premade one for iPod yet, but here is a 200ft MP3 player
