Hi there

At the moment i have a D200 in an Ikelite house + a 5503.50 dome for my 60mm nikkor lense.

I would like a wideangle lense.

And at the moment i am looking at the Tokina 12-24 mm lense, but according to Ikelite i need a 5503.51 dome for that lense.

Has anyone use the Tokina lense in a 5503.50 dome instead ?

I am not to happy about needing another dome for a single lense.

well, And I am with you on this, you will need to get the other port. Most dslrs require different ports for different lenses. Some ports can support different lenses with extension tubes, but sometimes the differences in lense sizes require different ports.

Believe me I wish it wasn't true I have begun to see what type of ports I will need for the d50 and it sucks. But such is the price to take the dslr underwater.

BTW...how do you like the tonika lense? I want to get the 12-24mm as well but don't want to spend $1000 on the nikon version.

You could always go with the Nikon 12-24mm, it looks like it's fine with your present port. I've got that lens, and it's very nice. Although the Tokina is cheaper, but if you have to spend another $200 for another port there go the savings.

Unfortunately that is the deal with UW photography. More bad news, that 60mm really is going to do a LOT better in a flat port.

The new 8" Ikelite domes have extensions you can purchase so you don't need multiple domes. The bad news is that I'm not sure how easy it is to change out extensions on the fly, AND the extensions are almost the cost of a fixed dome.

I actually think i am going for the more expensive Nikon, simply to not having to buy another port and ending up with my current one which i then have no use for.

I get a flatport maybe for free :)

As a friend told me, if you try to find a hobby more expensive than underwater photography, you would have to collect airplanes, or very old cars :-)

I can only agree on this one :-)

I would end up saving money, if buying the Tokina and a port, but getting a port specifically for just a single lense, is in my eyes a bad idea.

And the Nikon should be a better lense.

Hehe ;) that is actually good news :) Specially because i might end up getting a flatport for free :-)

Better look into that also.

I am going to be a poor man. I should have picked up sewing instead :) :rofl3:

This will be good for traveling, as having fewer ports to carry is important for me. The 8" port system with port extensions work well for me since there is only one dome to carry.

Danish,

My LIGHT Traveling Setup: Ikelite D200 , one DS125, one dome (5503.50), 12-24 and 60mm.

The 5503.50 Dome works with the Tokina 12-24 (w/ +2 dioptre) and 60mm Macro. I have had both the Nikon and Tokina and they are comparable, not exactly the same... but close enough that I ended up purchasing a Sigma 15mm + used 5503 Port with the savings!

It's actually not such an expensive hobby as they go. I have friends that race Harley's, build antique cars, collect guns, and the list is endless.

Considering building a race ready Harley can easily run $20,000, and you can blow an engine in one race, not to mention the space and tools involved.....:D

Now if you stack travel and diving expenses on top of everything, sure it get expensive, but I'd be traveling and diving anyway! :eyebrow:
