Hi,

I am off to Tobago soon and wondered if anyone knows what the diving is like and where is the place to go there to do it

regards

Rich

I just returned from there, the diving was fun. We saw the world's largest brain coral and the usual Caribbean fish. No mantas but we heard of the other divers who saw them the day we dove so it is just luck. We dove with Redman in Speyside, didn't reserve ahead just showed up at his shop (he lives behind it). The most # of divers other than us on his boat was 2, so it was a nice small group. Some days it was just my wife and I. Not many tourists on the Speyside of the island which was great. Our favorite dive site was Bookends. I'll be posting a trip report soon.

Thanks for the info, looking forward to Speyside although I will have to drive up there as far as I can gather, looking forward to your report

If you are staying down the bottom of the island, there are some dives near you that are reasonable – the Maverick wreck and the juvenile-smothered Arnos Vale, to name a couple – but the best diving by far is up around Speyside. The currents can rock sometimes, so be prepared, but that is what makes the corals and sponges so healthy.

Try and get up to The Sisters on the west of the island as well, as you often get hammerheads shoaling around the pinnacles.

We stayed at Speyside at Manta Lodge in May 2005 and had a great time. If you want to do plenty of dives in Speyside you will need stay locally as the drive from the south is about 90 minutes as the roads are very bendy and hilly. Great to drive on though. We did see one Manta and another group there at the time saw the hammerhead and a Manta Ray at the Sisters.

We also liked Book Ends and pretty much all the dives we did there. Those currents really rip there.
