Thanks for the input. The instructor is not the owner, he is just one of the guys that work at the shop. The Dive Cons volunteer their time, apparently other shops pay but my LSD does not, from what I understand they do get free service and air fills….

$10.00 per tank, you want service, or don't you?

Presumably, I have already paid for the service.

Tips are for service above and beyond what I should, as a customer, reasonably receive for the purchase price. I tip based on the service - excellent service will be rewarded; substandard service will not receive the same amount.

Do you want the services of a Divemaster, or not? HIS services are not part of your dive cost; otherwise you get two tanks and a boat ride.

If I wanted a DM or guide, the DMs or guide's service would be paid for in advance ;)

Hiring a guide is different than getting service from a Divemaster on a boat or when assisting in instruction, the latter is the concern of the originator of this thread. I guide a lot, I never get tips for that, I don't expect it.

Tips are for servents??

As an instructor, divemaster or whatever, you are the servent. You're here to SERVE your students and customers. If it wasn't for your students and customers you wouldn't be here. Plain and simple. If they want to tip their instructor, they can.

A tip (also known as gratuity) is an amount of money received by some who provides a service instead of a formally required payment. Instructors demand a certain payment for their services. Divemasters' services are optional to the buyer whether on a dive excursion or when in instruction.
