I'm taking a wreck course in July and am not sure how frequently I'll dive wrecks after that. Would you recommend that I initially rent a pony for the course, or should I go ahead and purchase one and get in the habit of using it on most dives, especially deep dives? It's a pretty steep investment (what, around $300-$400?) to make.

Also, in your experience, do all dive centers who offer wreck charters also rent ponys?

Depends on pony and reg you choose. Since you only really need a 1st and 2nd stage with either a short hose spg or pony bottle guage it does not need to cost that much. I was fortunate in that I had 3 regs(4 now) but I used my original sherwood Brut to make my pony reg. I got a 19 cu ft from scubatoys (99 bucks at the time) believe it's like 105 now, and bought a pony guage for 30 bucks off ebay from an dealer on there. It may have beeen diver's discount not sure tho it's been a while. so say 140 for those and you could get a good used 1st and 2nd serviced reg set for another 100 if you look. Check with your lds. Maybe they have a rental set for sale that they are replacing.
