I am purchasing a new Halcyon bc with SS backplate and steel twins.Is it safer to have all my weight on my back ie:backplate,tanks,and additional chunk of wieght. or go with a weight belt for the 8# needed.
any thoughts before purchase of extra weights?

If you're overhead-restricted, having jettisonable weight is a moot point anyway.

Assuming you are overhead-restricted:

Wearing a weight belt is sometimes needed for trim. I've used a weight belt for some of the load just for trim purposes; and, you won't know if you need to change the weight distribution until you're in the water with the new gear.

If you go with the belt and some weights at first, you can figure out your weighting and switch to a v-weight later. Starting with a v-weight could take a while to get right.

Is there any chance of borrowing some weights for a few dives?

Out of curiousity, how did you decide you'd need 8 lbs?

I thought I'd need ten, using a computation that took into account the weight of the hardware, the difference in buoyancy between one steel tank and two, etc., and was grossly overweighted...

well I am probably doing the same calculation that you speak of. By seeing the comments, I am best off to get into the water with the gear with a borrowed belt to get the trim correct and then get a V weight. I just was not sure if a seperate belt or V weight was the better way to go.
