Hey everyone!

Just wondering about people's experience archaeological diving in Egypt?

I'm really keen to dive the Lighthouse of Alexandria and maybe Cleopatra's Palace, would love some dive shop recommendations especially for those that are definitely still up in running in 2024.

Am thinking around June / July and I'll be a solo female traveller.

If Egypt doesn't work out, check out this site in Italy.

And then tell us all about it because it is on my bucket list. Thank you.

June/July weather is generally favorable along the North Coast. Crowds are smaller than in height of summer too and I think it's better to look for guides like this https://gowithguide.com/egypt or better to join some facebook group during your trip Bei Facebook anmelden they have more knowledgeable on what to there.

Former maritime archaeologist here -- you can't. It is impossible to get permits to dive Mediterranean sites outside Alexandria unless you are part of a scientific/university team. The ones in Alexandria are effectively a scam. Visibility is ****, the water is dirty and the safety standards of operators are questionable at best.

Red Sea diving will be a lot more enjoyable. There are plenty of 19th-century wrecks there which do count as archaeological sites under Egyptian law, and some even date to the early Ottoman period although I'm not sure if any commercial operators dive them.

I have watched a few youtube videos about the reputed area of the Red Sea crossing at Nubweiba. Most of those involved shallow recreational diving. I would like to do some deeper technical dives in the area. But, alas we cancelled our Dahab trip this year, so it will have to wait until next year.

Fictional events do not tend to leave behind archaeological evidence and if such an event did indeed happen there is nothing to suggest it was at Nuweiba.

If you’re interested in that kind of stuff then I recommend a hike up Mount Sinai (after enough time since your last dive). Great views, not really challenging and at least we know the mountain exists. The nearby monastery at Saint Catherine also has some of the oldest Christian relics.
