Tipping on liveaboard.

I will be on Mike ball's Spoil Sport in 17 days. The shop I am going with told us to plan on $150-200 per person for the week.

My God !!! So you are saying if there is a 5 person crew I need to bring another $1000 just for tips above and beyond the $2000 or $3000 I paid for the trip???

Personally I think this tipping thing is getting out of hand.

i believe what they are saying is that each guest bring a total of that amount for the entire crew.
not give each crew member that amount.

I sure hope so or I will never be able to do one.
I originally read the quote to mean bring that much for each deck hand, crew member, dm and cpt.

It...I hope....means each person on vacation bring that amount.

Still...it just shows how poorly the people are paid IMHO. I feel people are "forced" to tip. Just charge up front what the costs are....and leave it at that. If someone does something nice...then maybe a tip....but not just for doing their job. This has gotten to be a real sore point with me.

you could look at it this way:
you take your wife out to dinner for her birthday.
you know which restaurant you're going to.
you have an idea how much the dinner will cost.
you automatically figure the gratuity in. (10-15-%)

so going on a liveaboard is sort of the same.
(except the wives won't be there.)

Sorry to hear that! My wife is my favorite buddy on our liveaboard vacations!
