Heh, very very true. That is when you come to scubaboard and research it and see if your instructor was full of BS.. :)

Matt

Yes, always double-check your instructors here, cause we KNOW there is no BS on SB!! :crafty:

Thanks guys!

DorsetBoy, how much diving do you do in Scotland? My girlfriend went to St. Andrews and was on the sailing team. Can you say frostbite?

FloppyFoot

lol, mostly I seem to be imune to the cold, still dive all year in a semi, took a course out a couple of weeks back, the students in dry suits, were cold when they came out of the water and laughed when I was still walking about in my semi having a sly cigi.

Just buy the beer. :)

Tipping?

Isn't that a city in China?

Tips? Never received cash. Drinks yes, even cakes and pies. But cash? Please give me directions to this magical land where instructors receive cash tips.

Tips...hmm...I've gotten the odd beer, a lunch, a cup of coffee and a slice of pie, a ride to the airport and on one occation a very nice bottle of '86 Bordeaux from students or from people I've taught or guided.

What brings most pleasure is when (typically younger members of a family) ask for a postal address and send me postcards when they're on a diving vacation somewhere. That gives this nice warm fuzzy feeling inside that you've succeded in transmitting enthusiasm and love for diving to the next generation -- and it beats any other "tipping" when 5 years down the road I see a postcard from a guy I dove with when he was a teenage brat, who took his new wife on honeymoon, got her hooked on diving and thought he'd share his joy with me :)

I've never accepted a monetary tip, nor would I know what to do if I got one offered one day. I'm not from a "tipping culture" in general.

I have received meals and drinks as tips (not expected), but what I enjoy the most is an email or phone call from a past student telling me about the dive vacation they just got back from. Their excitement kinda makes it all worth while....

I gave my instructor a Christmas present last week and I'm taking him and a couple of the DMs out for drinks tomorrow.

I don't tip, but then I have no money! Also, in Scotland, tips (Except in restaurants/cafes/taxis etc.) is seen a bit weird.

Some of the nicest tips were when the student wrote or told my boss that they appreciated me.
