A mistake many of us make when shooting underwater is taking that shot from above the subject. Here is a link to an example of shooting from above. While it is still I shot I like, it is not nearly as interesting as one taken from below the subject, like this example.

It is not as easy to get this angle and you have to be VERY careful that you aren't touching down on the coral reef.

Nice tip! I never even thought of that... Goes to show you that before you can really get the hang of uw photography, you need to get your scuba skills in good order.
 
It often makes the subject look bigger and more imposing as well. Just be careful with your lighting as you may miss the subject by pointing the camera up instead of down if you are close.
