Two experiences:
One in Cancun: The first room they gave us was musty, droppings still there from the previous guests, rancid water standing in the bathroom, view of the top of the satellite dish (I'll verify the name of the resort by Pm if anyone wants it). My husband went down to discuss the problem- was told that the oceanview rooms are $40 more. Evidently that meant $40 palmed into the hand of whoever happened to be working the desk that day. He told them that $40 is cheap to have a happy wife, we moved to a great oceanview room without stink or standing water. My bet is that one out of three guests who check in get shown to that room first, it's a great little fundraiser.
In Coz: (PM for resort name). We had a large party, had emailed in advance asking to be put in the new section, all on the same floor, preferably on one of the highest floors (great views from up there). Each of us had emailed with the same request. When we arrived, we were all scattered into the far reaches of the old section. We tried a valiant, comeon guys request in person, were totally rejected, and decided that it wasn't worth fighting for, since we wanted to stay in good moods. And the rooms in the old section were very spacious and very liveable. However, the "ol' palm a $20 trick" was spotted across the counter- a quite successful maneuver by a fellow guest. "Oh yes, Senor, you will have the room you want." Oh well, what are you going to do? Fight years and years of a time honored tradition? Nah. Join em or take what you get. You're still in paradise...
