Does the "$20 handshake" work to ensure getting a nice room? My wife and I will be staying at the Presidente July 12 -16 (can't wait!), and I've reserved a garden view room. We honestly don't care about ocean view or ocean front anywhere we go, so it's not worth the extra daily rate for us. But we do like a nice quite room in good repair. We also prefer king beds, which I assume are less available than doubles.

Anyway, will handing the desk clerk a spiff help me get what we want? How much is enough? Does it need to be done discreetely like in Vegas where cameras are everywhere?

Thanks!!

I have stayed at Casa Del Mar a number of times. Every time we check in they put us in a room that faces parking lot with no balcony or patio. I go and do checkout dive and my wife goes back and complains about the room. When I get back we have been moved to a room with balcony/patio that faces the ocean. Every time when a large group shows up they put them in parking lot rooms. This dance goes on every time I have stayed there. Its almost comical. we have never given a tip. for this service

All you have to do to get an upgrade to ocean view at the El Presidente is ask! I heard this from several people. We joined the Ambassador Club for $150.00 and were guarantied a free upgrade, water every day in the room and a fruit basket. We got all of the above but many people got upgrades just for asking.

I rec'd an upgraded room for just asking as well. This was during low season and I am sure they will accomodate. High season would be different situation entirely I'm sure.

I'm not trying to upgrade to an ocean view room, I just want to be sure I get the best garden view room available. I don't want to pay the rates for ocean view, nor do I want to spend $150 on the Ambassador Club. But I am willing to pony up a sawbuck or two to make sure I have a room with good plumbing and A/C. I just want to know if a nice tip to the desk clerk will do that in Coz, like it will in some other tourist venues.

Thanks for your help!

Ask to see the room first. if you are unhappy with it voice your concern at the front desk. I'm sure they will try and accomodate you if you don't like the view, size of bed, the room smells musty, or a dripping faucet etc. I don't think you will have a problem. It is a friendly island and they go out of their way to accomodate their bread and butter.

Maybe you misunderstand. The upgrade was free for the asking. My understanding is the front desk will give you a better class room if you ask for it.

See above. ^

Stephen, there's one thing you will get at the Presidente, and that's ANYTHING you request. The service is outstanding there and I seriously doubt they'd ever let you leave unhappy in any way. Just ask for a better room and I'm 99.9% sure they'll gladly see that it happens. We were in a garden view room, too. This isn't the garden you have at home and this is not DaysInn we're talking about. We even had our own Iguana outside our door. We absolutely loved the level of service there,as I'm sure you will. My wonderful fiance' fell sick while we were in Coz and the hotel immediately had a doctor sent to our room.....I don't remember it costing anything either.

I hope your stay there is as fantastic as ours was and I hope the diving is even better than your expectations (it will be,trust me.) If you arrive at the hotel too late in theday for a divetrip, head out to the water for a little snorkeling/night dive in front of the hotel....you will be pleasantly surprised (that's all I say about that.)
