Here's a tip I learned when flying. After you have booked your flight, go to Expedia or any of the other search sites and enter in your destination and date of your flight. It will give you a list of all the other airlines that have flights on the day you are flying. Do this for both your home airport or where you lay over. Print it off and bring it with you.
Now, if you have a flight cancelled or miss a connection, while the rest of the passengers are scrambling to figure out what to do, you already have the info you need and can go directly to the airline that has the next flight out, possibly getting that last seat available.
Doing this has saved me at least once, hope it works for you,
