Thunder Bay Buoys in

Well the folks at NOAA have indeed been busy and 15 wreck sites are now buoyed for the season. A few more are planned to be placed next week. Thanks to Tane, Wayne, and Russ for dealing with their vessel shortage and "gitten 'er done!".

Then there are the plans to place yet more new sinkers at about 8 new sites this summer.

That is except for the Middle Island Sink hole and Nordmeer. Worried that someone headed to the Nordmeer buoy might just run the wreck over and sink themselves. Nordmeer is only 2' below the surface.

When placing the buoy on Grecian they could see her stern rail from the surface!
Hope to have my boat ready next week and get some of the best video of the year!

I am very interested in visiting Alpena this year with my boat. Where can I get a list of the wrecks that are marked by a surface marker or how to approach / dive the shallower wrecks?

abbottd2 you can go to the sanctuary s website, Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary Home Page there is a interactive Google map with all the wrecks, it will give you lat - longs, depth, and some history on the wreck this way is some what cumbersome because you won't know the name of the wreck until you click on it.

Or you could stop by the Maritime Heritage Center, they should have a print out of all the buoyed wrecks, or computer joe owns the local dive shop he might have a list also.

Thanks! After trying the map again I got the popups to actually "pop up". I had to zoom in and then shoot for the little red wreck under the google marker.

They havent updated the status of the buoys either.
