Catherine, here's a bit more on polarizers.
I tried Cokin filters years ago, mostly because they seemed to be an easy way to get a split ND gradient filter for over/unders.
A) They are cheap. And the images look it.
B) You better have a big dome, because the filter holder is huge.
C) They are attached to the front screw mount. If the front element rotates as you focus, you run the risk of the holder rotating while extending; if this contacts the inside of the dome, the scratch is nearly impossible to polish out.
D) The filter holder loves to show up in reflections.
